Welcome to Homefinity’s guide to the best places to travel in the fall months.

Part of the benefit of homeownership is having a great place to come home to after you’ve been away. Vacations are more than just a day trip of well-earned fun, it’s a chance to recharge and become more productive once you return to “normal life”.

You don’t even need to leave your home to have a proper vacation, which is just another reason to prioritize buying a home.

But if you do want to venture out, Homefinity has gathered their recommendations for the best places to travel in the fall.

Last taste of summer in fall

Most folks think of summertime as the perfect time of year for a getaway. However, there are multiple benefits to saving your vacation time for the autumn.

  • Fewer crowds than in the summertime
  • The fall colors and the beautiful fall foliage can’t be beat (leaf peeping!)
  • Fall festivals and outdoor adventures galore
  • Who doesn’t like pumpkin patches during Oktoberfest?
  • Road trips before the snows cover the highways

From early September to late October, there are amazing outdoor activities to be found across the country or around the world. Plus, autumn prices tend to be cheaper for accommodation, and the staff has more time to spend on guests since there are fewer of them.

Best national park for late September: White River National Forest

If you ever have the opportunity to travel to the White River National Forest in the beautiful state of Colorado—drop everything and go.

Late September has fall foliage to the extreme, with the Colorado Rockies for a perfect backdrop. Featuring Maroon Bells, one of America’s most photographed peaks, its beauty is taken to a new level when painted with the warm colors of the aspen leaves.

The fabulous Maroon Bells Scenic Area features many hiking trails ranging from short hikes near Maroon Lake to overnight backpacking trips into the spectacular Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness.

Best romantic getaway for mid-September: Sannino Vineyard B&B

Looking for a different kind of NY romantic getaway that isn’t New York City?

Look no further than Sannio Vineyard B&B, located in Cutchogue on famous Long Island’s North Fork.

Enjoy a private patio or balcony with your favorite person while overlooking the vineyards vistas. Share a freshly made breakfast before strolling through the vineyards themselves. You might think you were in Italy or Paris without having to travel to Europe.

Check out the new eco-friendly tasting house on-site for a complimentary tasting of one of Sannino’s locally produced wines and cheese platter. Echoing their commitment to sustainability, the tasting house was constructed with environmentally efficient materials.

Best fall destination in Vermont: The Wildflower Inn

The Wildflower Inn in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is a charming, kid-friendly place that shows off what the state offers.

Imagine spectacular fall foliage all around you as you are biking down the Kingdom Trails—a massive hit with mountain bikers. If you’re interested in something slower, choose a horse-drawn wagon ride, a scenic drive to the top of Burke Mountain, or say hello to the other trail hikers.

The inn features classic buildings with a charming village-like setting that houses suites and rooms for couples or families. All of this is surrounded by 300 acres of Vermont natural beauty.

Best fall destination for coastal New England: Chatham Bars Inn

The Chatham Bars Inn is arguably one of the best luxury seaside resorts in Cape Cod—and late September to early October can still have mild temperatures.

A Cap Cod landmark since the 1910s, it features a quarter mile of the most exquisite private beach in New England. An oceanfront resort that harkens to a bygone age, the Main Inn has luxurious guest rooms and private suites for guests.

New spa suites provide an adult-only retreat with easy access to the adjacent spa and outdoor pool. Most of the cottages include decks, balconies, or terraces with spectacular views of the Atlantic.

Best west coast fall destination: Napa Valley, California

While the entire Northern California wine country has gorgeous autumn colors in the fall months, family travelers should head over to the Napa Valley region. In particular, everyone should seriously consider the area around Calistoga and St. Helena.

Without the excitement of the summer wine festival crowds, you can sample plenty of wine at your leisure during the fall. The autumn weather is crisp and pleasant, and there are plenty of kid-friendly activities for the whole family.

And if wine isn’t your cup of tea, you can take the family to visit the Petrified Forest or gaze at the majesty of Old Faithful hot springs (not the Yellowstone National Park one).

Best late fall destination: Hawaii

While most people may not consider Hawaiian islands for the fall, there are several benefits to October in the Pacific.

  • Fewer crowds.
  • The water temperatures are warmer this time of year, generally hovering at a steady 80F.
  • While still very hot, the October temperatures will be less likely to cause overheating, like in the summer.
  • Because October is considered the off-season, the overall rates can be cheaper.

We hope this guide can give you some inspirational ideas about where to travel during the fall months.

But don’t just stop here. From Boston to the small towns around Blue Ridge Mountain to the beaches of Florida and the state parks of Oregon or South Carolina—there are hundreds of fall locations for you to choose from.
